Why heat piles up upstairs
Two things are working against your second floor at the same time:
- Heat rises. All the warm air in your home naturally drifts upward, so the upstairs starts hotter before the sun even factors in.
- Your attic is an oven. On a hot NWA day, an attic can reach 130–150°F. That heat sits right above your upstairs ceilings.
If the only thing between that 140° attic and your bedroom is a thin, worn-out layer of insulation, the heat radiates straight down — faster than your AC can pull it back out.
Why your AC can't win the fight
Most systems are sized for the whole house, and the upstairs is the hardest zone to cool. When attic heat keeps pouring in, your AC runs constantly, your bill climbs, and the upstairs still never catches up. Cranking the thermostat down just wears the system out faster.
If you're cooling the whole house just to make one upstairs room bearable, the problem is almost always above the ceiling — not the thermostat.
The real fix: attack it at the attic
Instead of fighting the symptom, stop the heat at the source. Two upgrades do the heavy lifting:
- Bring your attic up to R-38. A proper layer of attic insulation slows that radiant heat dramatically, so your upstairs stops absorbing it all day.
- Air seal the ceiling. Air sealing closes the hidden gaps where hot attic air (and your cool conditioned air) leak through, so the insulation can actually do its job.
