When homeowners call us about attic insulation, the first real question is almost always the same: do I just need more insulation added, or does the old stuff have to come out first? Here's how we think about it.
When a top-off is enough
If your existing insulation is dry, clean, and free of contamination, you usually don't need to remove anything. We simply blow fresh fiberglass or cellulose on top to bring you up to a code-recommended R-38. It's the most affordable option and often takes just a few hours.
- Existing insulation is dry and undamaged
- No rodent or moisture contamination
- You just need more depth to hit R-38
When you need removal & replace
Sometimes adding more insulation just buries a problem. If the existing material is wet, moldy, rodent-damaged, or simply worn out, we vacuum it all out and start fresh. Removal also gives us the one and only chance to air seal your ceiling and install ventilation baffles — the steps that make your new insulation actually perform.
- Insulation is wet, moldy, or contaminated
- Evidence of rodents
- You want it done completely right, with air sealing and baffles
The honest part
A top-off runs most NWA homes around $1,500–$3,000, while a full removal and replace typically lands at $4,000–$7,500+. Because the price difference is real, we'll never tell you to remove insulation that's perfectly fine. We show you photos of what's actually up there and let you make the call.
