If your Northwest Arkansas home never feels quite right — too hot upstairs in July, drafty in January, and a power bill that keeps creeping up — your attic is usually the first place to look. Here are the five signs we see most often when a home is overdue for an insulation upgrade.
1. Your energy bills keep climbing
If your bills are higher than your neighbors' or rising year over year without an obvious reason, your attic is likely leaking conditioned air. Insulation that's thin or settled lets your HVAC fight a losing battle against 140° summer attic heat.
2. Upstairs rooms are always too hot or too cold
Big temperature differences between floors — or one bedroom that's never comfortable — are a classic sign of uneven or insufficient attic insulation.
3. Your home is 15+ years old and the attic's untouched
Insulation standards have changed a lot. Many NWA homes were built when far less insulation was the norm, and that material has been compressing and degrading ever since.
4. You can see the joists
Pop your head into the attic. If the insulation is level with or below the wooden floor joists, you're well under the recommended R-38 and leaving comfort (and money) on the table.
5. Drafts, dust, or critters
Drafts around can lights, excess dust, or any sign of rodents all point to air leaks and possibly contaminated insulation that should be removed and replaced.
The good news: most of these are fixable in a single day, and the savings show up on your very next bill.
